About KB

A smile in my mind

I moved to the UK with my parents when I was only 6 months old from Freeport, Grand Bahamas, where I was born. My mother is English and my father is German so in theory, I am a part German, English and Bahamian.

My childhood home was in the City of Durham and that is where my passion for history really was ignited. Durham can trace its’ history back to 2000BC.
I have only been a writer for a short time. I never intended to write. It just happened. Actually, I left college with a law degree, went on to become a partner in a city law firm and it was only after my husband and I had our 3 beautiful children that my writing began.

When my eldest child, Chloé, was 6 years old, she was learning about the Victorians at school and I very much wanted to bring history ‘alive’ for her. The books in the library were pretty dull so I had the idea to write something that would make history fun.

Chloé is a very keen and good rider, often going out for hacks or practising for competitions. She is also a good athlete so like most young girls has a busy schedule.

William and Toby enjoy nothing better than messing about in the garden. They will either be found in the barn, up trees, rowing on the pond or making dens and go-karts.

William & Toby

Family time is very important. Whether we are walking, cycling, fishing, playing board games, having fun in the garden or enjoying a movie together.

My Family

Life for me without my children, husband and animals would be very dull. Excluding our ducks, we have in total 15 pets. I love to sit in our study with our cat, Muffit sprawled across my work, researching and writing.

Get to know the characters

“Hey there! I thought that you might like to know a few things about me that you don't already know.”

You already know that I'm seven years old but do you know Filo's age? No? Well neither do I! I found him in our pond at home when he was what's called a froglet. That was when he had just turned into the shape of a small frog but still had the tail part of a tadpole. He looked weird! Although I would say that he still looks weird. Did you know that actually the word 'froglet' was first used in Victorian times? Having done a bit of research about frogs, he was probably about two months old then. We have now been together for 2 years which officially makes Filo an adult frog but no way is he grown up! At least not mentally! He's what's called a 'Common ' frog but he's always telling me that there is nothing common about him! He also has ideas above his station because he's just found out that the collective noun for frogs is 'an army of frogs' so now he thinks he's a born leader!

Anyway enough of him for now. I live with my mum, dad, sister Chloe and baby brother, Toby in a house called Willow Cottage. I usually get on with Chloé but she's just become a teenager and so I'm trying to keep out of her way at the moment because she can get REALLY grumpy! Toby is quite sweet as little brothers go. He is never in trouble but that is because Filo keeps away from him! At least for now that is! As for me, I'm always getting told off thanks to Filo. I try to control him but he never listens to me. If he decides he's going to do something, there's no stopping him! And he never has a good plan. The 'naughty step' features very often on our radar! In other words, most days you will find us there, thanks to Filo! Do you have a 'naughty step' in your house? It's a boring place isn't it?

I go to Poffley Primary School where I am in Year 4. My form teacher is Mr Hardy. He is amazing at history which is now my favourite subject. He makes it all so real and fun. He can be tough but he's usually fair. Just don't get caught talking!

I love playing rugby and watching wildlife as long as Filo doesn't get involved. My favourite meal is ANY roast but I generally like all food except perhaps mushrooms. At least my diet is more appetising than Filo's. Insects, snails, slugs and worms don't appeal to me. I think that's probably enough information about us. Why don't you go and have some fun around this website?

See you soon!

William meets a Chimney Sweep

Seven year old William, with the help of his pet frog, Filo, are regularly to be found on the 'naughty step' but their adventures are only just beginning when William takes a book from a bookcase to reveal a secret passageway which leads him back in time to London in 1874. William makes friends with a climbing boy, Feather, who shows him a glimpse of Victorian life. Filo can't help but cause mischief getting William into more trouble. William is led from an upper class mansion through the streets of London to a Victorian school. Eventually he is brought back to 'the naughty step' when he leaves the school room making him realise that maybe his school isn't so bad after all. Throughout the book the readers have to find Victorian artefacts that appear on most pages thus extending their Victorian knowledge. After his adventure William researches his Victorian history producing his 'worth knowing' facts. The readers get to extend their learning by deciding whether the facts are true or false.
